How do I volunteer?

Please visit signup.com/go/vBjcyeP to find times for each school requesting volunteers. From the site, you can browse the open dates, schools, and time slots for volunteers. Each time slot is about 1-2 hours, and you can sign up for as many slots as you are able to commit to. After signing up, you will receive a confirmation email with your volunteer times and additional information as needed.

Upon registration, you will receive information regarding when and where you need to go for your volunteer shift. On the day of your shift, check in at the school’s front office 10-15 minutes prior to your volunteer slot and they will direct you where to go from there.

Kelly Sherretz is your primary contact leading up to your shift. Your site coordinator will be in contact with you in the days leading up to your shift.

Your signup confirmation email will include a link to modify your volunteer registration. Please also notify Kelly Sherretz at kscollon@udel.edu if you need to cancel or change your registration. If you need to cancel due to a same-day emergency, please contact your site coordinator and Kelly Sherretz.

In the event of a school closing or cancellation of Launch Into Your Future Week activities, Kelly Sherretz or the site coordinator will be in contact with you as soon as possible. Please monitor the email address you use to sign up for up-to-date information.

Generally speaking, Launch events will go on if school is in session, even if there is a delayed opening due to weather. If you have any concerns regarding whether or not a school will cancel their shift due to weather, please contact the Site Coordinator or Kelly Sherretz to confirm the shift.

The following tasks are expected of volunteers:

  • Greet students as they arrive and ask them to sign in.
  • Help students create profiles for and log on to the online applications of their preferred colleges/universities and begin their application(s).
  • Guide students through online applications and answer questions they may have. If you do not know the answer to a student question, please refer the student to the staff member assigned to the computer lab.
  • Monitor printers to ensure that any applications that are printed remain in order and replenish the paper supply as needed.
  • Share personal college experiences with students. Please remember that students will be applying to a variety of colleges and universities. The role of a volunteer is to be supportive of students’ choices, not to recruit students to a particular school.
  • Congratulate each student on applying to college and encourage them to complete their admission file by sending in their high school transcript, test scores, and any other documentation that the college may require.
  • Provide any handouts provided by the school such as a “What’s Next” flyer.
  • Remind students that the next important step in the college application process is to register for their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) username and password. They will need this to complete their FAFSA form, which should be open in December.
  • Remind them to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible and to attend financial aid events to learn about opportunities to fund their education.
  • Encourage students to share their college application experience with their classmates.
  • Ask students to sign out.
